Water Safety Session 3: Think So You Don't Sink + Reach or Throw, Don't Go + Stay Calm
Red Cross Longfellow's WHALE Tales is a dynamic water safety program designed to educate children about the importance of water safety through engaging storytelling and interactive activities. With a focus on making learning enjoyable, the program aims to instill essential water safety skills in young learners, empowering them to confidently navigate aquatic environments.
Lesson 7: Think So You Don't Sink
Objectives:
- Understand how water emergencies happen
- Explain ways to help oneself if having trouble in the water
- Explain how to escape if caught in an ocean or river current
- Know how to spot signs of hypothermia and how to prevent it from happening
- Know what to do if suddenly immersed in water over one's head
Lesson 8: Reach or Throw, Don't Go
Objectives:
- Explain how to safely help someone who is in trouble in the water
- Explain why only a lifeguard should go into the water to rescue someone
- Identify objects that could be used for a reaching or throwing assist
- Understand how to be rescued by someone
- Demonstrate basic steps needed to do a reaching and throwing assist
Lesson 9: Stay Calm, Think It Through and You Can Know What to Do
Objectives:
- Know what a thunderstorm is and what dangers may be related to thunderstorms
- Understand basic facts about floods
- Understand safety considerations when going onto a frozen body of water
- Know how to rescue oneself after falling through ice
- Explain safe behavior to follow when there is a flood warning or flood watch
