As we research the lives of our forefathers we have to place them in context of their environment and times. These two factors have a tremendous impact on the decisions they ultimately make as well as the quality of their lives. Medical care and childbirth touch all. Join me as I focus on the lives of those from my own lineage and the stories that were passed down.

Dara’s interest in genealogy was ignited by her paternal grandmother who often shared family stories.  Because of her, Dara soon knew nearly everyone’s name, what branch of the family they belonged to, who was cheating on whom, and who held a broken heart. As her grandmother aged, began to forget, and finally passed, Dara honored her memory by continuing the research she so loved. Through countless visits across the country to archives, libraries, unsuspecting family members, and, court houses Dara has brought to light, that which is her family.

She has attended the Institute of Genealogy Historical Research (IGHR) training, RootsTech, both National Genealogy Society (NGS) and African-American Historical & Genealogical Society conferences and numerous workshops and seminars, and thanks to COVID, she feels she has earned a black belt in virtual webinars.

As well as being a member of the Genealogical Society of Sarasota (GSS), Dara also is a member of the Alabama Genealogy Society (AGS), the Macomb County Genealogy Group (MCGG), the African-American Historical & Genealogical Society (AAHGS), and the National Genealogy Society (NGS). Besides being a prolific researcher of her family and genealogy related topics, she is also an accomplished artist who captures her family and ancestors in watercolors.  And as a member of GSS, she facilitates The Scribes, a group designed to discover one’s family history through writing.

Her written work has appeared in Alabama Genealogy Society News, the Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society News; Journal of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society; NGS Magazine and on the FamilySearch wiki. Additionally, she] designed, wrote, edited, and distributed her family newsletter for fifteen years.
