“…it wasn’t a railroad, and it didn’t go underground…”
Discover the “Secrets of the Underground Railroad!”
The Underground Railroad was a well-organized but secret plan that included a series of “safe houses” that led enslaved people in the south to freedom in the north and eventually into Canada.
“Follow the Drinking Gourd”
Join Alice White as she talks about the messages that were secretly conveyed to runaway slaves using songs, quilt patterns, and even the stars. Learn how how the Underground Railroad operated, view the ten quilt patterns commonly used to convey messages to runaway slaves, and look at actual photos of some of the buildings or "stations" that were used along the URR to hide runaway slaves during the day.
Your host and Underground Railroad Conductor:
Alice White, resident of North Port since 1990, teacher for over 30+ years
