A Florida History Lecture Series Summer 2024 "In the Islands" Program

Program held from 2PM - 3PM

About This Lecture

When John Nolen designed the City of Venice, he followed a design practice he used in other commissions by laying out a boulevard to end at a grand focal point. In the case of Venice, that was the Gulf of Mexico. But what to place at that focal point changed before his plan was even implemented.

About This Series

Island life. Island time. Island living. There's just something about islands that brings to mind swaying palm trees, a salty ocean breeze and a cold drink in your hand. The islands of Sarasota Bay are no exception. But, was the history of our favorite barrier islands as idyllic as we like to think? In this summer's session of the Sarasota County History Center's Florida History Lecture Series, we'll explore the riveting stories of how our islands were formed, built, pioneered and developed.
