Join Sarasota County archaeologist Steve Koski as he explores the history of the Paulsen Point site, its position on the landscape, and its relationship to other sites in the vicinity, and recognizes and commemorates the people who once lived on the shores of Lemon Bay.
Paulsen Point is a historic name for Indian Mound Park, located on the landward shore of Lemon Bay at the end of Winson Ave. in Englewood, Florida. It is owned by Sarasota County and managed by Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources. The park is utilized as a boat launch, bayfront beach, and picnic area with a beautiful setting. It is also the home of a prehistoric Indian Mound, the Paulsen Point Site, recorded on the Florida Master Site File as 8So23. The site was once part of a large complex of prehistoric sites that included shoreline shell middens, a prehistoric cemetery and burial mounds that served as a habitation area for the native peoples who once lived on the shores of Lemon Bay. Some of these sites, like the mound at Paulsen Point are protected, other sites have been lost in time by development, artifact hunting, and scientific inquiry.
