Program Description

Buildings with historical significance often get that designation based on age or type of architecture or where it’s located or who lived there. But you should also consider its purpose, function and role in history. This is the story of how Venice became the vibrant “City on the Gulf” that citizens and visitors alike all love and appreciate. Within that framework, this story also addresses the story of the 1927 Venice Train Depot. Our speaker, Mike Donnellan from the Venice Area Historical Society will give you a better understanding why it was built, who used it and how it was used, you will better appreciate the true value and importance of this historic building.

Mike Donnellan was an operations executive in the telecommunications and data processing industry in the Greater Boston area. After retirement in 2012, Mike and his wife JoAnne discovered Venice and purchased a home here.

With a keen interest in history, Mike set out to learn as much as he could about his new hometown. He joined the Venice Area Historical Society and became a trained Docent at the Society’s Depot Campus.  In 2024, Mike was asked to join the Board as a Director and was elected to the position of Vice President.  He also serves as the Stationmaster and is responsible for all operations at Venice Depot Campus.

In appreciation The Friends of the Frances T. Bourne Jacaranda Library is making a donation to the Venice Area Historical Society.
