Program Description

Order Up! Sarasota Restaurants of the 50's

Presented by:

  • Elisabeth Jimenez, Archivist, Sarasota County History Center

A Florida History Lecture Series Fall 2025 "Bon Appetit!" Program

Program begins promptly at 2PM

About This Lecture

Like many communities in Florida, residents in the early formative years of Sarasota relied heavily on local agriculture and markets to fuel their families. However, as Sarasota grew and residential populations rose (not to mention the growth in tourism), more options became available through local eateries and the convenience of fast food. Join us as we take a look at rise of popularity in restaurant culture in Sarasota during the 1950s!

About This Series

What did the first settlers in Sarasota Bay eat? What did the first hotels in Sarasota and Venice serve their guests? And what can those menus tell us about the history of our region? Join the staff of the Sarasota County History Center and special guests this fall as we serve up a series of talks focusing on food as a way to explore the past.
