Program Description

Details

The month of October is the best time to see Mars in our night time sky. Mars will be in opposition, directly opposite the Sun in the sky and nearly at the closest point of its orbit to Earth.

NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassadors Linda McKenna, Kaitlin Porter, and Mark Brown will be live in this virtual program to provide a wealth of information regarding the red planet’s appearance in October.

During this presentation the ambassadors will provide information on the planet Mars, and an update on NASA’s latest rover, Perseverance, which is now heading to Mars and will arrive in 2021.  You will learn what opposition is and why October 2020 is the best time to view the red planet. Do you want to know how to locate Mars in the night sky and identify the constellation it resides in? They will explain that, as well as the best time to view Mars. You’ll also learn about Mars’ motion in the sky including retrograde motion. And if you have a telescope, find out what features you might be able to spot on the Martian surface.

This virtual program will be hosted in Zoom. Once you register you will be sent a confirmation email with information about using Zoom. 24 hours before the start of you program you will receive the Meeting ID and Password.
