Program Description

Details

Join us as we take stock of where we are and where we need to go as a community to be better stewards of our own mental health and the collective mental health of our community. We will also discuss mindfulness and the healing power of nature.

Speakers:

Dr. Kathleen Moore: Executive Director of the Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI) at the University of South Florida and Dr. Amanda Sharp, USF faculty member affiliated with FMHI.

Drs. Moore and Sharp are health psychologists who focus on person-centered care. We will have a dialogue with them about how mental health care is having a “moment” right now - both the rise in anxiety, depression, and loneliness, as well as the tremendous increase in awareness and acceptance of mental health concerns.

Dr. Katherine Clements: Dr. Katherine Clements is the Ecology and Natural Resources Educator for UF/IFAS Extension and Sustainability Sarasota County.

Dr. Clements, a former physician, will take us on a mindfulness journey with the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku or forest bathing. Although we will just get a taste from our seats, Dr. Clements offers forest bathing regularly in county parks. She will discuss the mind/body connection and the benefits of taking time to immerse ourselves in nature.

Moderator: Bonnie Silvestri, JD, CCEP, ADAC, Sarasota County’s Ethics and Compliance Specialist and Countywide Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Coordinator
