Cuban Rancho Heritage
Presented by Sara Alvarez, Education and Volunteer Specialist, Natural Resources Department, Manatee County Government
A Florida History Lecture Series Spring 2024 "Taming Nature" Program
Program held from 2PM - 3PM
About This Lecture
The Florida Gulf Coast has always been a hotbed for commercial fishing activity and the Cuban Rancho period of the 18th century was no exception. While the Cuban fishermen that spent almost one hundred years on our coast are tough to find archaeologically due to their ephemeral nature, they are an important piece of the story of Florida's rich history. Join Sara Alvarez, Education and Volunteer Specialist with Manatee County Natural Resources Department as we explore Cuban Rancho Heritage.
About This Series
Florida lives in most American imaginations as a place with sunny weather, luxurious beachfront homes and endless fun and ease. The reality isn’t too far from that, but there are some trade-offs. Florida’s climate can be hot, humid and stormy at times, not to mention the occasional threat of thunderstorms, hurricanes and forest fires. Inhabitants of Florida have had to learn to combat, live with, learn from, and weather the natural environment and natural disasters throughout the history of our state.
This Spring, join the Sarasota County History Center while expert speakers and staff explore the enthralling history of how Floridians have tamed nature.
