"100 years of the Selby and Palmer Families" is presented by John McCarthy, VP for Historic Spanish Point Campus, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.

Shortly after arriving in Sarasota in 1910, Bertha Palmer invited the Board of Trade (predecessor to Chamber of Commerce) to meet with her to talk about Sarasota's future. This may have been the first spark toward the creation of what is now Sarasota County. While she did not live to see the new county born, her two sons Honore and Potter Jr. and her brother Adrian Honore were key players in the effort to create Sarasota County 100 years ago. Simultaneously, William and Marie Selby were busy building their new home and landscaping the grounds of their beautiful property on Sarasota Bay and Hudson Bayou. The program will explore the early work and sustained civic contributions of these two families and how they continue to influence the region after 100 years.
