Women In Art: Beauty or Beast?

In this lecture, we examine the changing portrayal of the woman in art from the glorified personification of beauty to the perceived arch-enemy of man, temptress, sorceress and femme fatale that leads man to perdition.

The negative depiction of the woman was particularly emphasized in times of women's struggle for social and political equality.  In this thematic review of artworks from Antiquity through the 21^st Century, we will examine the different cultural milieu that influenced the artists’ portrayals of the woman. Audience engagement and Q&A is encouraged.

Dr. Andre Krauss is a published historian and researcher with a PhD in Social Psychology and a PhD in History of Art, as well as 40 years experience as a university lecturer and researcher.
