Sarasota County Libraries and Historical Resources announces “Suncoast Empire: Bertha Honoré Palmer, Her Family, and the Rise of Sarasota" as their 2021 One Book selection.

Written by Frank A. Cassell the book details the true story of Bertha Palmer, one of the most well-known and wealthiest women in America who, in 1910, traveled to the small settlement of Sarasota on the west coast of Florida.

She spent much of each year for the rest of her life in Sarasota, investing in cattle and farming, creating communities out of marshlands, pine forests and tropical jungles. The society queen and social reform advocate excelled as a frontier entrepreneur, just as she had in every other endeavor in her life. She managed to make a good deal of money and to change Sarasota forever.

We will be reading and discussing "Suncoast Empire" in this virtual edition of the Osprey Public Library's book discussion group.

Copies of the book are available for pickup at the Osprey Public Library or through the Sarasota County Public Library Catalog, (Search the Catalog). It is also available as an ebook through cloudLibrary,  OverDrive/Libby and hoopla®

This virtual program will be hosted in Zoom. Once you register you will be sent a confirmation email with information about using Zoom and you will also receive the Meeting ID and password.
