"Venice as a Maritime Republic" - A great power of 15th c. Europe, Venice was symbolized by the Lion of St. Mark. Its position on the Adriatic gave it access to all the ports along the Dalmatian coast (Dubrovnik), the eastern Mediterranean, the Ionian Sea, and even to the Black Sea. It fought to become “stato da mar and a stato da terra” (a sea and land Empire)! This incredible history is described in the paintings of the Doge’ Palace, and the palaces along the Grand Canal. Slides are shown.

Presented by Dr. Rosanne Martorella. Sponsored by Sarasota Italian Cultural Events.
