Program Description

Details

Opening talk for "Standing Tall, Flying High", and exhibition of traditional Chinese Shadow Puppetry presented by the Elling Eide Research Library and Selby Library. Enjoy tea and almond cookies while Ann Roddy, Asian Collections Curator & Research Specialist at the Elling Eide Center discusses the history of Chinese shadow puppets and puppetry. The shadow was first brought into Chinese consciousness in the 4th century BCE by the Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi, and since then has been a creative element of entertainment, from traditional theater to the silver screen. This exhibition features both ancient and modern theatrical representations, characters from famous Chinese novels and myths, all brought to life through the interplay of light and shadow. "Standing Tall, Flying High" will open Saturday January 12, 2-5, and the exhibition will continue through March 15 in the Selby rotunda.

All ages welcome.
