Program Description

Details

Join us for a panel discussion on the archaeological heritage of North Port, Sarasota County, and Southwest Florida. Experts and enthusiasts will gather to explore what makes the area in which we live a hot spot for archaeological discoveries. Together, we will unearth issues and curiosities surrounding local sites and archaeology as a profession.

Topics include (but are not limited to) archaeology as a career, how archaeological sites are found and processed, how members of the public can get involved in preserving important sites, and sites that are important to North Port and Sarasota County such as Warm Mineral Springs, Little Salt Springs, and the newly uncovered Manasota Key offshore burial site.

Speakers include Steve Koski (county archaeologist), Maranda Kles (VP of Archaeological Consultants, Inc.), Jeff Moates (representing Florida Public Archaeology Network), and Bill Locascio (Assistant Professor at Florida Gulf Coast University).

Renee Di Pilato, PhD., Director of Libraries and Historical Resources will be the moderator for the event.
