Program Description
Join Alice White as she talks about the messages that were secretly conveyed to runaway slaves using songs, quilt patterns, and even the stars! You will learn how how the Underground Railroad operated, view the ten quilt patterns commonly used to convey messages to runaway slaves, and look at actual photos of some of the buildings or "stations" that were used along the URR to hide runaway slaves during the day. Alice will also explain the importance of “The Big Dipper,” the drinking gourd, with a song and a hand-painted mural that interpret its meaning.
