Golf was practically unheard of in America when John Hamilton Gillespie arrived in Sarasota with his golf clubs in the spring of 1886.This all changed when Gillespie built one of the country's first golf courses in Sarasota. Less than fifty years later, the now popular sport was dramatically and forever changed by the events in Sarasota. Learn some of the remarkable history of golf in Sarasota.
