Katherine Brion, Assistant Professor of Art History at New College of Florida, will discuss the key factors that determine the "public" character of an artwork, and why these factors can easily lead to controversy. She will also address various functions that public art has served in the United States both in the past and the present, and consider the following questions: which of these functions predominate in Sarasota? What aspects of public art might the city and the broader community wish to develop?
