Dr. Pete Carney and his Jazz Quartet Present --- "The Devil's Horn: How the Saxophone changed American History"
Played by African American musicians, this dusty French military instrument from the 1800's gave American music its wailing voice for jazz in the new century. In celebration of Black History Month, this concert lecture pays tribute to innovative black saxophonists who integrated through music, before civil rights could be spoken about. From Sidney Bechet in New Orleans to Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Sonny Rollins in New York, these musicians sang through the saxophone, asking a segregated society to listen. Join Dr. Carney, director of Jazz Studies at State College of Florida, in a special tribute to the instrument that rose above race and gave America its own unique artform.
