Capt.Gerald "Jerry" O'Donnell (U.S. Navy, ret.) is a leading expert regarding the history behind Alfred Eisenstaedt's ubiquitous photo for Life Magazine entitled V-J Day, 1945, Times Square, on which Sarasota's Unconditional Surrender sculpture is based. He was instrumental in confirming, through his participation in Mitsubishi Engineering Research Laboratories' analysis of the photo, the identity of the sailor; and in the publication of the definitive history of the photo, The Kissing Sailor: The Mystery Behind the Photo that Ended World War II by Lawrence Verria and George Galdorisi (2012, Naval Institute Press).

Sponsored by the Sarasota County Veterans' Commission.
