This 6-part workshop is designed to introduce new players to the world of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). By the end of the workshop, participants will have a solid understanding of the game's rules, character creation, and basic gameplay mechanics. The workshop will culminate in a live play session where participants can apply what they've learned in a fun and engaging environment. The skills and concepts learned will provide a strong foundation for further exploration of the game. For ages 13-18 only.
Workshop Schedule *Participants must register for EACH workshop*
Week 1: Introduction to Dungeons & Dragons - June 12, 2025
Objective: Understand the basics of D&D, its history, and the different editions.
Topics Covered: Brief history of D&D, overview of the 5th Edition rules, the role of the Dungeon Master (DM), basic terminology (e.g., hit points, initiative, saving throws).
Activities: Group discussion on expectations and goals
Week 2: Character Creation - June 19, 2025
Objective: Create a playable character.
Topics Covered: Choosing a race and class, determining ability scores, selecting skills and equipment, background, and personality traits.
Activities: Step-by-step character creation exercise and sharing and discussing character concepts
Week 3: Core Mechanics - June 26, 2025
Objective: Learn the fundamental rules of D&D.
Topics Covered: The d20 system, making ability checks and skill checks, combat mechanics (attack rolls, damage, armor class), and saving throws and death saves.
Activities: Role-playing scenarios to practice mechanics, plus a Q&A session to clarify any doubts
Week 4: Role-Playing and Storytelling - July 3, 2025
Objective: Develop role-playing skills and understand storytelling in D&D.
Topics Covered: Creating a backstory for your character, role-playing techniques, collaborative storytelling, the importance of player agency.
Activities: Group role-playing exercises and discussing and critiquing role-playing performances
Week 5: Advanced Rules and Magic - July 10, 2025
Objective: Explore more advanced rules and the magic system.
Topics Covered: Spellcasting classes and spells, magic items and artifacts, advanced combat rules (e.g., grappling, shoving), conditions and status effects.
Activities: Creating and using magic items and simulating advanced combat scenarios
Week 6: Live Play Session - July 17, 2025
Objective: Apply everything learned in a live D&D session.
Topics Covered: Review of key concepts, setting up a game session, and basic DMing tips for players.
Activities: Live play session with a pre-prepared adventure, post-session debrief and feedback, participation in discussions and activities, successful creation of a playable character, and active engagement in the live play session.
