Centennial Program “From Socialite to Hog Raiser: Bertha Palmer in Sarasota” by Frank Cassell

Dr. Frank Cassell, author of Suncoast Empire:  Bertha Honoré Palmer, Her Family, and the Rise of Sarasota, explores Palmer's evolution from a world-famous socialite to becoming a successful businesswoman, an important agricultural innovator, and a developer of superior animal husbandry techniques.  As a result, the Sarasota area rapidly grew in population and wealth. Her fame, personal wealth and social standing attracted many other well-to-do individuals to invest and build winter estates.  This in turn allowed the Sarasota area to become a center for literature, architecture, and the performing arts.
