Chrystine Keener. PhD. Ringling College of Art and Design will compare the paintings and personalities of two of the most iconic Italian artists of the Baroque period, Michelangelo Merisa da Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi. Travel back in time to study Caravaggio's compositions that defied 17th century decorum with allusions to Rome's seedy underground activities. Conversely, Gentileschi's depictions of women, who judge and administer harsh punishments to the undeserving, challenged to stereotype of a female artist. Her dynamic paintings reflect what she wrote to a male patron, "You will find the spirit of Caesar in this soul of a woman!"
