Willem de Kooning (1904-1997) was a Dutch-American Abstract Expressionist artist. He was born in Rotterdam and moved to the United States in 1926 where he became an American citizen in 1962. In 1943, he married painter Elaine Fried. In the years after World War II, de Kooning became part of the New York School where he perfected his “Action Painting” style.

American born Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) became a major figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement because of his interpretation of “Action Painting.” Pollock spread his canvas on the floor where he dripped, poured, splashed, and swirled industrial paint. His wife and muse, Artist Lee Krasner, had a profound impact on his career and legacy.
