Please join us for a special presentation series from Baila Miller on the Artistic Rivals that rocked the art world!
Édouard Manet (1832-1883) was a French painter who was one of the first 19th-century artists to paint modern life. He was a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Modernism. His early masterworks, The Luncheon on the Grass caused great controversy and served as rallying points for the young painters who would create the future French Impressionism Movement.
Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance. He is regarded as one of the founders of French Impressionism, He was a superb draftsman, and particularly masterly in depicting movement, as can be seen in his rendition of dancers, racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and for their portrayal of human isolation.
